Review: Hotel Sommer / Germany

Review: Hotel Sommer / Germany

Forget those cliché places – we’re all about uncovering little hidden gems. If you’re in need of a winter wonderland retreat or a summer getaway, feast your eyes on Hotel Sommer.

Tucked away on the outskirts of Füssen, Hotel Sommer is a unique place to wind down after exploring the charming surroundings Füssen has on offer – including King Ludwig II’s three palaces: Neuschwanstein castle, Hohenschwangau and Linderhof Palace. Bursting with history, breath-taking views and quirky shops and restaurants, it’s safe to say Füssen really does have a little bit of everything.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Experience the best of Bavaria at Hotel Sommer. If you’re seeking a deal, our best bet is searching for deals on booking.com. If you’re lucky you can grab a cheap upgrade to a superior double room – often this fluctuates between a £9- £20 price difference. However, it’s undeniably worth it. Lust over the room’s romantic balcony overlooking Neuschwanstein castle, tune into crazy German programmes with its flat-screen HD TV and stash all your ready-made cocktails and Bavarian beers in the room’s mini bar. (Just to note: the room obviously includes all the hotel essentials, like a hairdryer, complementary bottles of shampoo and body lotions and an array of towels – just in case you were wondering!) If you’ve forgotten any spa amenities, Hotel Sommer has you covered with their complementary spa beach bag.

After a long day exploring, unwind at the Wellness spa section at the hotel. It’s fair to say this hurls Hotel Sommer into the Number One place to stay in Füssen. With its panoramic indoor pool, cozy pool-side loungers, spacious sauna and numerous massage jet streams, your relaxation levels will hit an all-time high. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, get closer to nature and brave the outdoor pool.  Bask in the views of the Alps, the Allgau mountain and the unfortunate placing of the hotel’s cark park to the right-hand side of the pool (our advice is to look away from the latter). Get snap happy in this little piece of heaven!

Make getting up from the cosiest bed, ever, a little bit more bearable with the hotel’s complimentary breakfast buffet – presenting traditional Bavarian and international dishes which are locally sourced and produced.  Whether you’re needing some fuel for the adventures ahead or you’re on your way to Munich, Frankfurt or back home, this breakfast has to be one of the best – not only in Füssen but across the 4* hotel spectrum.

Transport is fairly limited around Hotel Sommer. Reception will happily call a cab for you, although the constant rides to the town and the castles can seriously rack up! There’s a set rate of €15 from Hotel Sommer to the central train station and around €15-20 to Neuschwanstein castle back to the hotel. We have some good news, though, if you reserve through booking.com, you can grab your free electric bike so you can cruise around whenever and wherever during your stay.

We must note: Hotel Sommer advertise that the property is a 5-minute walk from the beach. However, in winter or certain periods of the year, you’re faced with an enormous ditch after the Forggensee lake water dries up and fades to slushy mud (yep, not nice, right?). Expect the unexpected in Füssen and maybe don’t raise your hopes too high if you’re wanting to soak up the sun on a beach.

We’re thoroughly obsessed with this place! Even if you’re not a hopeless romantic, Hotel Sommer, the town of Fussen and the surroundings will capture your heart.
